A Visitor On Europe’s Roads

Altlandsberg

On Saturday, we drove south east to Altlandsberg which is just outside of Berlin. The concert was an outdoor event organised by the main church in the town. The church was built originally in 1450. It has been modernised recently and now has underfloor heating and chairs and a stage that can be moved outside or used inside.

The concert drew around 150 people, just over 1% of the population of the town and surrounding villages.

We notice many things about being in what for many years was East Germany, the DDR. There are many old buildings that have been renovated rather than replaced. There are more still in need of renovation. Many of the towns have retained their cobbled streets in the centre which makes driving interesting. Near where we are staying, a paved road has been laid alongside the old cobbled road so we drove on the left side for a few hundred metres to get advantage of the paved road when no one was coming the other way. The locals all do the same.

As we drove back from the church after the concert, we spotted a storks next built on top of another church tower. It had a pole with a camera attached to the side of it. This is a webcam. We couldn’t see whether there are storks at home at the moment but you can see them on the webcam.
